Data sheet material 1.4878 / AISI 321H

X8CrNiTi18-10

Austenitic heat-resistant stainless steel

Brief description

The material 1.4878 or AISI 321H is an austenitic heat-resistant chromium-nickel steel, which is stabilised by the addition of titanium and is comparable to the material 1.4541 is. The material is often 1.4541 also double certified as 1.4878

General properties

Corrosion resistance
Weldability excellent

Special properties

Scale resistant up to 850°C

Corrosion resistance

Good corrosion resistance is given in natural environmental media with a low salt and chlorine content. Material 1.4878 is resistant to intergranular corrosion both as supplied and in the welded condition, but is not resistant to seawater.

Weldability

The material 1.4878 can be welded using all standard welding processes with and without filler metal. Heat treatment after welding is not required.

Machinability

The material 1.4878 tends to work harden during machining. Due to this and its poor thermal conductivity, high-speed steel or carbide tools should be used. Sufficient cooling should be ensured during machining.
