Austenitic corrosion-resistant stainless steel

Brief description

The material 1.4401 or AISI 316 is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel frequently used in the food and chemical industries. It offers good corrosion resistance in chlorinated and acidic media. This grade differs from the material 1.4404 due to a higher carbon content.

Corrosion resistance

In natural environmental media, in media with moderate chlorine and salt concentrations and in the food industry, material 1.4401 is characterised by excellent corrosion resistance. The material 1.4401 is not resistant to intergranular corrosion, which is due to its high carbon content. This grade is also not resistant to seawater. (PREN = 23.1 - 28.5)

Forgeability

The forging process involves heating to approx. 1150°C - 1180°C in order to forge in a temperature range of 1180°C - 950°C. This is followed by rapid air or water cooling. This is followed by rapid air or water cooling. Corrosion resistance is reduced by scale or annealing colours. This is removed by chloride-free chemical or mechanical processes.

Weldability

The material 1.4401 can be welded well with and without filler metal. Heat treatment after welding is required.

Machinability

Compared to the lower-carbon 1.4404 machining the material 1.4401 is somewhat more difficult.
