Austenitic corrosion-resistant stainless steel

Brief description

The material 1.4305 or AISI 303 is the classic austenitic steel for machining and is therefore colloquially referred to as „free-cutting steel“. The addition of sulphur has a strongly positive effect on the machining properties, but has a negative impact on corrosion resistance and weldability.

Corrosion resistance

The addition of sulphur limits the corrosion resistance in acidic and chloride-containing media. The material 1.4305 is not resistant to intergranular corrosion. (PREN = 17.0 - 20.7; the PREN formula does not take into account the damaging influence of nitrogen and should therefore be viewed with scepticism)

Forgeability

Due to the risk of overheating and the simultaneous need for high forging temperatures, the material 1.4305 is difficult to forge. Forging takes place in a temperature range of 1150°C - 950°C during the forging process. This is followed by air cooling. There is a risk of hot cracks forming during forging.

Weldability

The addition of sulphur severely restricts the welding properties. There is also a risk of hot cracks forming during welding.

Machinability

Due to the addition of sulphur, short-breaking chips are formed during machining, which is why the material 1.4305 is particularly suitable for automatic machining. Sufficient cooling should be ensured to prevent overheating during machining.
