1.4016

Data sheet material 1.4016 / AISI 430

X6Cr17

Ferritic corrosion-resistant chromium steel

Brief description

The material 1.4016 or AISI 430 is a ferritic steel, which has a lower corrosion resistance compared to stainless austenitic grades. However, due to its high chromium content, this grade is resistant to stress corrosion cracking, whereas most conventional austenitic steels are very sensitive. This material is often used in the manufacture of kitchen and household appliances.

Corrosion
Consistency

Due to its higher chromium content, the corrosion resistance of the material 1.4016 is higher than that of 1.4003. Good corrosion resistance is given in natural environmental media. However, this material grade should not be used in salt and chlorine concentrations, e.g. in seawater or swimming pools. This material is resistant to intergranular corrosion as supplied, but not after welding or processing at elevated temperatures. (PREN = 16.0 - 18.0)

Forgeability

The forging process involves heating to approx. 1100°C - 1130°C in order to forge in a temperature range of 1130°C - 750°C. This is followed by air cooling. This is followed by air cooling.

Weldability

Like most ferritic steels, the material 1.4016 is also very sensitive to embrittlement due to grain growth. Arc welding is not recommended. Gas containing hydrogen or nitrogen should be avoided, as should preheating or oscillation during welding. The workpiece should be free of oil and grease. Without a final heat treatment, the mechanical-technological values in the weld seam and its surroundings can deviate greatly from those of the base material.

Machinability

This material grade tends to smear due to its ferritic structure. Suitable cutting tools and adapted machining conditions should be selected.
